HOST Families Sought

To House International Visitors

 

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have someone living abroad share their ideas, culture and language with you and your family? Visiting students and educators are anxious to meet and learn from you, too.

 

Opportunities to host a short-term visitor for a few days, a month, or even up to a full school year are available. Our office works with host families throughout each hosting period.

 

Here are just a few situations for you to open your home and heart to:

§      April or May: two, 2-week host families are needed.

§      April-May: four, 1-month host families are needed.

§      August 2004 – May 2005: two host families are needed the entire school year.

 

 

We hope you think seriously and act quickly about this unique opportunity.

ICISP Educator Exchange

MATC, a member of the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP), encourages educators to look beyond the U.S. for professional and personal opportunities. For two weeks, educators travel abroad and live in each other’s homes, attend each other’s classes, and learn about their host’s educational system.

 

MATC will again participate during 2004-05. 2004-05 program information has already been distributed via GroupWise e-mail.

Maxine Lubenow Scholarship Fund

Update

 

The Maxine Lubenow Scholarship award helped pay tuition costs for MATC students studying in Cuernavaca, Mexico December 26, 2003 – January 18, 2004. Without these $300.00 awards, some individuals may not have been able to experience this unique learning opportnity.

Thank you to everyone at MATC for donating to this fund through the Giving Campaign and other means. Your gifts have made a difference in the lives of our students.

 

WTCS Summer Institute

1-Month Student Internship Program

Quebec, Canada

 

Business Administration faculty have an opportunity to enhance their students’ educational experience by encouraging them to travel to Canada and complete a month long, nonpaying internship.

 

What an opportunity!

Students accepted in this program will travel to Quebec, live with a family for a total immersion experience, and work within their program industry.

WTCS International Education Committee

 

The standing committee on international education is composed of representatives from all 16 college districts and was established in 1994 to facilitate internationalization throughout the Wisconsin Technical College System. The committee’s work includes initiatives in professional development for students, faculty and staff; curriculum development; sponsoring the annual summer institute on internationalizing curriculum; and collaboration on activities to foster globally competent citizens. MATC is represented by Rahim Setoodeh, Joanne Johnson-Clauser, Tony Baez (ISA rep.) and Barbara Cannell (committee chairperson).

 

 

 

 

MATC International Education (I.E.) Committee

 

Twenty MATC faculty and staff donate time as members of the International Education Committee. Projects these individual work on include:

*   Providing recommendations on FIPSE direction, procedures and practice I.E. activities college-wide.

*   Reviewing MATC student scholarship applications.

*   Writing grants and Applications for I.E. projects, including Fulbright projects.

*   ICISP MATC educator applications, selecting college representatives as  hosts of visitors from Europe in October 2004, and as travelers to Europe in 2005.

 

Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education (FIPSE 3-DEE)

Student Exchange Program

During January, Mequon Campus Environmental and Pollution Control Technology students Jennifer Adams and Julie Radermacher will spent 3 weeks in Mexico studying at Universidad Tecnológica de Tula-Tepeji in a similar program, visit industry sites and analyze pollution and water. Final project criteria include developing web-based activities to facilitate relationship-building and creating a greater knowledge base. Stipends and scholarships support the students participating in this unique learning experience.

 

Later this year, students from Mexico and Canada will participate in the program by traveling to Wisconsin, living with “host” families, and attending classes at Mequon Campus. This is the first time exchanges have occurred in this five-year project.

Professionals Abroad!

Mexico Study Tour

During the holiday break, 36 individuals visited the city of Cuernavaca, Mexico, to study the Spanish language and learn about Mexico’s culture. Participants returned and continue their studies at MATC or use their new language skills in job positions across the community.

 

Seven students from this group received scholarship awards to supplement tuition costs while in Mexico from the Maxine Lubenow Scholarship Fund.

 

This is the seventh year MATC offered this very popular study abroad program.

Island Ecology

Environmental Study Tour to Puerto Rico

 

Faculty, take advantage of this all inclusive Wisconsin Environmental Education Center environmental education course offering teachers a two-week experience in Puerto Rico during Summer 2004. Wisconsin teachers can learn 3-graduate credits to study Island Ecology.

The program includes:

{ Special exchange opportunities with Puerto Rican teachers,

{ 3-graduate credits consisting of:

  • 1‑credit - online course in the spring,
  • 2 credits – earned in Puerto Rico

2004-05 NSEP Boren Scholarships

for Study Abroad -- Deadline February 12, 2004

 

&   David L. Boren undergraduate scholarships for study abroad during summer 2004, fall 2004, and spring 2005 are available through the Institute of International Education. This NAFSA Global Partner is currently accepting applications for the 2004-05 National Security Education Program (NSEP).

 

&   Scholarships provide:

o        Funding for U.S. students to study abroad in Asia, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, the NIS, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East.

o       Awards ranging from a max $10,000 a semester to $20,000 for an academic year.

Ghana – Summer of 2004

 

PIER-African Studies of the Council on African Studies at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies has applied for a Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) grant to lead about 14 teachers/educators for curriculum development. We are accepting applications now for early selection of participants, but final notification will be made PENDING acceptance and funding of the project by the U. S. Dept. of Ed.

BENIN – Teacher Training (fluent in French).

 

DJIBOUTI – Teacher Training, Teaching ESL (must have computer skills and be fluent in French. Selected teachers will teach at H. S. and some at the main U. in Djibouti City.)

 

ETHIOPIA – Teacher Training at U./Teacher Training Colleges, Teaching English to Trainee Teachers, Teaching Computer at Voc. Instit./U. level, Health Ed. at U. Level.

 

GHANA – Teacher Training and Training of Trainers.

 

 

 

GUINEA – Teacher Training, Gender Equity and Teaching ESL (must be fluent in French).

 

International Foundation for Education and Self-Help (FESH) offers active and especially retired teachers the following placements for 2004-05:

MALAWI – Teacher Training both at the U. and Teacher Training Colleges, Special Ed. Teachers Trainers.

 

NAMIBIA – Teacher Training, Voc. Training, Computer Training, Business Ed., Training in various Tourism Industry or Educational Administration (proposal writing, project monitoring and evaluation) and Adviser.
