AGENDA ITEM: Welcome

DISCUSSION:

Roll call was taken and members were welcomed by Barb Cannell, Chair

AGENDA ITEM: Minutes, September 22, 2004

DISCUSSION:

Members asked to have the minutes resent and approved with these minutes at the next meeting (February 11, WTCS Foundation, Waunakee).

AGENDA ITEM: Financial Report

DISCUSSION:

The current balance is $20,194.59 which includes the $500 payment from the each college except WWTC.  The complete bill for Hessen’s responsibility in the fall exchange is being prepared and sent this week to Thomas Reinholz.

AGENDA ITEM: Collaborative Initiatives, Reports

DISCUSSION:

·       NAFSA – Bonnie Bissonette\

Region V Conference:  Bonnie, Gary Briggs-Dineen, Geoff Bradshaw & Bobbi Laine attended as mentees in the NAFSA Academy.  April 4-5, 2005, Madison: Wisconsin NAFSA meeting; not required to be a member to attend.  Cost will be less than $200.  Contact Bonnie with ideas for presentations.  These four members will prepare a document outlining the benefits to all WTCS for our participation.

·       ICISP – Geoff Bradshaw

ICISP has been relocated to Western Illinois University.  They are willing to extend an affiliate membership to WTCS colleges wanting to join if we make a proposal to them.  This would be for a reduced membership fee ($3000 – 3600) which would include participation in all of their activities.  It is cost-effective if at least six WTCS colleges join.  The affiliate membership would have a total of two voting members.  Geoff reviewed additional costs and benefits.  He will send this out to members through email for responses on their interest.  It seems the cost needs to be around $300 per college to raise interest.  Marie asked if it’s possible to reduce fees for out-of-state colleges that only want to take advantage of certain benefits rather than the complete membership.  Bonnie asked about having this Committee pay the fee for the affiliate.

·       Institute of Global Studies – Barb Moebius

No report at this time

·       DPI Council for International Ed and Summit – Chris Vandall and Geoff Bradshaw

The round table hosted by our Committee members is on Information Technology and Globalization.  The Summit will take place January 27, 2005 in Madison.  Chris and Geoff continue to work on planning with the committee.

This Committee will pay $500 and the WTCS will pay the other $500.  This has not been invoiced yet.

·       Study Wisconsin – Barb Cannell & Chris Vandall

Barb was not able to attend last meeting.  Chris will attend January meeting and will forward the minutes from the previous meeting sent by Mari McCarty.

·       Midwest Institute – Dick Hopfensperger

The consortium focuses on curriculum with grants and activities to support development of curriculum.  Its value includes curriculum development for internationalization.  Dick will pursue the possibility of a WTCS affiliate membership.

·       IBPF – Barb Moebius

No update at this time.

AGENDA ITEM: Partnerships

DISCUSSION:

International Businesses List – Bobbi Laine

The list is done and posted on our web page.  It does not include contact information, but members are welcome to submit this for updating.

Everyone is asked to review the list before the next meeting so we can talk about taking it to the next step with contact or more useful information.  http://www.wtcsglobaled.org/

AGENDA ITEM: International Programs

DISCUSSION:

·       China – Barb Cannell

Guests from Shanghai Institute of Electricity and Machinery were in Wisconsin  in November.   The delegation was  very interested in developing opportunities for faculty and student exchanges.  Barb will share details as they develop.

·       Quebec   Barb Cannell

Barb met with representatives of  John Abbott College and Sherbrooke College.  Both institutions are interested in developing relationships with WTCS colleges.  There is potential for 2-3 week (or longer) business administration internships in spring.  Barb will send more information as it becomes available.   Let Barb know if you are interested in hosting business administration internship students in spring 2005.

·       Germany Fall Exchange and Spring Planning:  Christine Lazaro did an excellent job in coordinating this exchange.  Dick also was very involved in making it successful.  The program was successful and plans are being made now for spring.  Carol Mennen and Robin Rathsack from FVTC will be coordinating the spring exchange.  Their first meeting will be in January.  The goal to offer exchanges for credit to our students is not possible when working with high schools in Germany, although the partnership is valuable.  Is there value to developing relationships with post-secondary schools?  Christine said these were all post-high school colleges.  She and Marie will continue the discussion to verify the exact levels of the schools represented by the delegation.

Fall 2005: The Germans would like to have an administrative exchange with administrators participating to build high level support for the program.

·       Cycle of Support:  Is there support for the idea presented in September that we would spend about three years exploring, developing and supporting each initiative and then move on, allowing colleges to continue programs that match their needs.

·       Develop strategies for each level.

·       Keep it flexible in case the next opportunity isn’t ready at the end of a 3-year period.

·       Barb will finalize the proposal for review at the February meeting.

·       Statewide Student Program:  This will be discussed at the February meeting.

AGENDA ITEM: Global Education and Training

DISCUSSION:

·       Summer Institute

Planning continues for the first time we’re sharing the Summer Institute with a business consortium.

A $5,000-10,000 profit is anticipated if we have 400 in attendance.  The profits will be shared with the consortium.

Date:  May 24 – 25, 2005 at Radisson in Green Bay/Ashwaubenon; pre-conference will be May 23, with a possible reduction in costs for the certification course.  He’s working with Gary Briggs-Deneen.  If members can provide businesses to Dick for the mailing list, please forward them to Dick.  He’s also still looking for corporate sponsorship.  He can provide information on sponsorship levels.  Goal still remains for reduced registration for students.  He’s looking for additional keynote speakers.

Can registration be done through our web site?  The sub-committee will contact Jeff Sonnleitner to see if this can happen.

·       Fulbright Visiting Scholar Application

The proposal has been accepted; revisions are needed.  Bonnie will bring revisions back to everyone through email.  Even if your college was not part of the original proposal, they can still request that one of the participants from the Arab World visit their college.

·       DACUM

It’s current; what’s needed is the inclusion of assessment activities.  Do we want to add the assessment components – or leave it up to the individual colleges?  Geoff, Dick and Bobbi will work on assessment components – to be shared at the February meeting and then go on our web page when completed.  The DACUM needs to be posted on the web page.

·       Curriculum Development

Chris Vandall asked Kathy Cullen and Barb Schuler to include global competencies for General Education requirements in the AAS changes.  This is in discussion.  .  The statement Barb delivered to ISA is:

The WTCS International Education Standing Committee strongly endorses the inclusion of a global education course in the reconfigured General Education core of the Associate of Applied Sciences degree.

ISA assured her that “global” will be included in the next wave of courses for transfer review with the UW system.

·       Command Spanish

Work Place Spanish is an alternative to Command Spanish and doesn’t require instructors to be certified in the particular curriculum.  Refer to www.workplacespanish.com for additional information.

·       AAS Core Course

See above on Curriculum Development.
